Milko turns 18:
The story of an extraordinary dog
We hope you enjoy this article
This month we are celebrating Milko's 18th birthday. Yes, ¡18! A real "Methuselah dog that defies all statistics. His longevity is not only due to his special genetics, but also to the environment and the care he has received throughout his life. But if there is one thing Milko has taught me, it is that life with a dog is a journey of constant adaptation.
Methuselah genetics: a winning lottery
Milko belongs to that exclusive group of dogs that are over 16 years of age, the so-called "Methuselah dogs". These long-lived dogs have been found to possess specific genes that slow down ageing and make them more resistant to certain diseases. But genetics is only part of the equation. Lifestyle and care have played a crucial role in their well-being.
Adaptation is key
Milko came into my life with some fears, especially towards other dogs. But he was the driving force that made me train in dog behaviour and create GUAU Eventsa community for dog lovers who seek to provide a balanced and enriching social life for their dogs. Thanks to her story, I understood the importance of helping other dogs to overcome their own challenges.
For years, we enjoyed long walks in nature, games and socialising. But with time, his body began to ask for a slower pace. Nowadays, although he still responds eagerly to every plan, his walks are shorter and, when we want to go on a long excursion, he is more willing to go for a walk, your trolley has become your best ally. Milko is still enjoying life, but now in a different way.
This adaptation process has been key: listen to what she needs at each stage and make the necessary changes so that she continues to feel part of it all.
Beyond exercise: other pillars of wellbeing
Although Milko does not run as fast as he used to, there are other aspects that we continue to take care of as much as possible:
- Social relations: Despite his age, he still enjoys the company of other dogs and humans. Although the encounters are quieter, social contact is still key to his emotional well-being.
- Integration into everyday life: His upbringing has allowed him to accompany me anywhere without stress. Whether at home or on an outing, he still feels safe and part of the family.
- Mental stimulation: Challenges do not end with age. Learning new things, solving small challenges and feeling capable is still fundamental for him.
- Food and microbiota: Diet has been a fundamental pillar of their wellbeing, and with age, their microbiota has needed more care. The gut microbiota is a universe of micro-organisms that influence digestion, the immune system and even mood. As we age, these little allies can be affected, and this is where the postbioticswhich help to maintain digestive balance and strengthen your health.
Collaboration with PET Bioticos: Committed to canine welfare
To celebrate Milko's 18th birthday and to continue to raise awareness of the importance of digestive health in dogs, we have established a partnership with PET Bioticosa Spanish company specialising in biotechnology for animal welfare.
