Why your dog can't sweat: the risk of heat and a surprising evolutionary lesson

We hope you enjoy this article

Did you know that dogs don't sweat like us?

Their sweat glands are concentrated in very specific areas: their paw pads and nose. Because of this, they cannot regulate their body temperature by sweating as we humans do. Instead, gaspevaporating the heat through the tongue and mouth.

This makes them much more vulnerable to heat stressespecially during the summer months. It is not just a question of discomfort: heat stroke can be fatal for a dog if not detected and treated in time.

What does this have to do with us?

Well, here comes the evolutionary curiosity: humans are true champions of sweat. We lost our body hair largely in order to gaining sweat glandsThis allows us to cool the body effectively... but at a price!

A new study published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B reveals that by reducing the number of hair follicles, we also lost essential stem cells to regenerate the skin.and that makes our wounds heal much more slowly than those of other mammals.

Evolution: a balance of advantages and disadvantages

So while our dogs cope with the heat with a limited system - panting and not much sweating - we cope with it by sweating profusely. But while they heal with speed, we do it slowlyPerhaps that is why for millennia we have relied on natural remedies such as herbal poultices.

What to do in summer with your dog?

🔸 Avoid walks in the hottest hours of the day (better early in the morning or in the evening).
🔸Offer fresh water and constant shade.
🔸Observe signs of heat stroke: excessive panting, very red gums, weakness, vomiting.

Conclusion

With a little care and prevention, tragedies can be avoided. And while you're looking after your furry friend, remember this little tidbit of information: evolution made us sweat, but it also made us heal slower.
